[MOVIE REVIEW] Unicorns are like giant puppies who want to murder you in 'Death of a Unicorn'
“Father-daughter duo Elliott and Ridley hit a unicorn with their car and bring it to the wilderness retreat of a mega-wealthy pharmaceutical CEO.”
The synopsis alone intrigued me, and after seeing Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, and Will Poulter cast, that was enough for me to be seated.
Rudd and Ortega have great chemistry as a struggling father-daughter duo with their broken relationship after the death of a loved one. Unfortunately, when you hit a unicorn, try to kill it, cover up the death, and hide it from your boss and his family, things may go awry…
Now, that might sound a bit ridiculous and probably doesn’t work for most moviegoers, but I found it to be hilariously intriguing, and it showed just how far people will go to replicate eternal life for a profit, of course.
The mythology behind unicorns in the film was a nice touch and gave us a sense of direction as to what would happen if these people exploited the unicorn’s magic. The trailers made it seem like a silly horror comedy, but it has heart and oompf!
My biggest takeaway was Will Poulter. His comedic timing, as a spoiled millionaire’s son who has no wits about him, made him a perfect casting choice.
Don’t let the trailers fool you, this is a comedy, but it’s also an absolute bloodbath that holds no punches and reminds us how awful the rich are. If anything, watch it for how cute the murderous unicorns are! They take their family traditions very seriously.
