Octavia Spencer teases Ma sequel

Academy award winner Octavia Spencer has wowed audiences for more than a decade, earning critical praise on everything from her emotional, dramatic delivery to her comedic wit. But for horror fans, 2019’s Ma holds a special place in the actress’ filmography.

The film follows the titular Ma, a nurse known as a bit of a social pariah amongst her adult peers who ends up gaining the popularity of the local teens when she allows them to drink in her basement. As Ma becomes increasingly obsessed with the teens, they try to cut ties, only for her to double down and display increasingly crazy behavior. While the film wasn’t beloved by critics, fans turned out for the film, earning $61.2 million against a $5 million dollar budget.

But now, almost seven years later, Spencer has teased the return of Ma in a sequel originally announced in 2025 with writer Ashley Nicole Black (Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, A Black Lady Sketch Show). In an interview, Spencer discusses how even after several years, it brings her great joy to see someone don the classic Ma wig, as well as praising Regina Hall’s parody of the character in Scary Movie (2026).

Director Tate Taylor teased a sequel idea back in 2023, with Spencer stating recently that the pair is still developing the script alongside its writer.
