[SMALL BUSINESS SCREAM] The VHS Society, Los Angeles, California
This Small Business Scream hails from the mean streets of LA and our friends, The VHS Society. Let’s hear from Luis, the founder and creative mind behind the screenings!
The Variety Horror Screenings (VHS) Society is an in-person horror movie club where everyone can celebrate their love of horror films. At our screenings, not only will you be able to watch a fun feature-length horror movie but also enjoy a showcase of horror shorts/music videos/performances from independent filmmakers and artists, use our themed photo-op, and support local small businesses by purchasing through their horror-inspired wares.
What got you into horror?
Oh, it's so silly. Growing up, I was such a scaredy cat. Things like an ad for the movie "IT" with Tim Curry would go on TV, and the visuals would haunt me for days. So I started reading Goosebumps in order to "prepare myself" and know what to do in case I would ever find myself in those situations. But then that turned into watching Buffy, Tales from the Crypt... Playing video games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill... I "exposure-therapied" myself haha, and now I love it.
What was the first horror movie you watched?
I don't particularly remember the first horror movie I watched. But I do remember being traumatized by Freddy Krueger. A slasher that attacks you in your dreams, where NO one can protect you? And it's not like you can just not sleep. Terrifying.
How long have you been in business?
Even though our movie club started during the pandemic in our backyard, The VHS Society's first formal screening was in August 2024. So, we're barely 6 months old! Come on and join us, the horror community is such a fun, nice crowd.
