Darkest Dungeon reveals an update after 6 years of silence!

Red Hook beckons players back to the game that started it all with the first major content update for Darkest Dungeon in 6 years, ten years following launch.

The update you never knew was coming is finally here! Darkest Dungeon has been hard at work giving us a brand new experience, and there are so many updates.

After 6 years, Red Hook Studios are proud to announce that brand new DLC will be released for Darkest Dungeon starting August 18, 2026, to PC, Mac, and consoles. The forthcoming update, titled The Fire’s Edge, will incorporate two heroes with unique mechanics from its critically acclaimed sequel Darkest Dungeon II, along with a variety of brand new features and capabilities. Red Hook Studios cordially invites former and new players to experience the classic turn-based adventuring of Darkest Dungeon in celebration of the surprise DLC and the 10th anniversary of its full launch.

The Fire’s Edge introduces exciting new content and mechanics to Darkest Dungeon. Fresh additions include two new characters—The Duelist and The Runaway—new districts, Trinkets, and, for those wishing to manifest optional derangements, tools are being forged for their exploits. Those who have explored Darkest Dungeon II will be pleased to learn that the Burn combat mechanic will be incorporated into the game. These features and more will be available to download starting August 18, 2026 for PC, Mac, PlayStation and Nintendo platforms, while the Xbox iteration of The Fire’s Edge is scheduled for a later date.

  • Fight your foes, flee your fears as new playable characters: The Duelist and The Runaway. Patterned in burns, draped in tatters and wielding a crude poker, the vagrant Runaway favours fire and stealth when pressed to fight. By contrast, the Duelist stands severe, her ornate capelet conspicuously pierced above the breast. No challenger has yet to hold quarter against her bitter edge.

  • Set the dungeon alight with The Runaway’s new combat mechanic: Burn

  • Delight in 3 new Districts: Fortify your Hamlet with the Academie Duello, Craftworks, and Archaeological Base Camp

  • Added Trinkets, with unique mechanics such as Trigger Uses, Quest Charges, and Progressive Trinkets

  • New writing, events, and more surprises to come.

Darkest Dungeon to Date

Originally, Darkest Dungeon was a crowd-funded dream of developers Red Hook Studios, propelled into Early Access on Steam in February 2015. Through their EA phase, the team continued work while providing transparent communications on delivery of updates, fixes, and content, as well as implementing player-suggested changes that aligned with their vision along the way. The full version released on PC January 19, 2016, followed by PlayStation 4 that September, then Nintendo Switch and Xbox One in 2018.

To date, four DLC in total have been released for the game: The Shieldbreaker, The Crimson Court and The Color of Madness were released for all platforms, with the last, The Butcher’s Circus, released on PC in 2020. The team is excited to reintroduce the series to audiences old and new, arriving at The Fire’s Edge in 2026, diligently developing it in tandem to providing Darkest Dungeon and Darkest Dungeon II support. This year also marks the 10 year anniversary of the full launch, a milestone the developers are excited to celebrate alongside the Darkest Dungeon community.

Darkest Dungeon is available on PC (Steam, Epic Game Store, GOG), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, Nintendo Switch, and iOS.
