Death is closer than you thinhk…

Keeping its momentum into the new year, Night Frights LA held their most recent film screening at Angel City Brewing this week, this time reminding everyone that “you can’t cheat death.”

Spearheaded by brother duo of Tristan and Gavin Winchester, the pop-up market / film screening continues to grow and evolve.

“We’ve done close to what I’ve wanted to do so far during this year, but I think last year we ended off with a bang with Gremlins; that was fun,” said Tristan.

This month’s event paid homage to Final Destination. While attendees enjoyed the usual vendors, photo ops, beer, and short film and movie screenings, this month’s iteration also included the addition of character actors roaming the floor, speaking to guests about the tragedy of Volée Airlines Flight 180. Guests also had the opportunity to meet Final Destination writer and creator Jefferey Reddick.

This one was a little tricky because it’s not like a “Scream.” I guess people can’t dress up. It’s like, death, you know,” said Gavin. “It’s way more broad than just some killer theme. So, with this one, we just kind of have to have…some more interactive people going around.”

Naturally, the grim reaper wasn’t far away either.

“We’re just trying to get more into people’s heads this time, whereas before we might just have like cool photo ops and stuff like that,” said Gavin.

This event was also unique in that it was held simultaneously in two cities in different states – Los Angeles and Austin Texas.

“I reached out to Celis Brewery in Austin, Texas not even a month ago, and I really wanted to make this happen same with Atlanta,” said Tristan. “I kind of just reached out to the brewery with the sole purpose of they put on the screening, I license the film, they handle the vendors and I get them more foot traffic. That’s the only clause there is, you know?

“The whole team over there has been super, super helpful with the endeavor. They want to grow just as much as I do, and it’s just about finding people that are like-minded and increase the genre and the infrastructure of what Night Frights LA and what they’ve already built.”

The brothers also continue to prepare for their big film festival later this year at Regal LA Live in Downtown Los Angeles.

“I’m definitely more excited this year because last year we were under Horror Con’s wing, essentially, and that prohibited us in a lot of ways when it came to the LA Convention Center which we were with at the time,” said Gavin. “It just was a completely different vibe I guess you could say. More corporate; it didn’t feel as much as the indie experience we wanted to.”

“When you go to a movie theater, you get popcorn, you watch films, it’s more comfortable. It’s just a completely different thing. So, this year we’re gonna partner with a movie theater, and that’s gonna make it so people can do that, and it’s going more like a, I guess traditional feel in a way.”
