Netflix’s The Last House traps family inside own home

A door that should open, but doesn't. Windows that should break upon impact, but don’t. The Last House, released on Netflix on Aug. 7, 2026 follows Jason and Ann Delgado through the startling realization that their family of four is trapped by an unknown force within the confines of their home. 

Although the story focuses primarily on one family, the film makes it increasingly clear that their situation is not isolated. Neighbors that they can view from their windows appear to be experiencing the same phenomenon, and as far as the family can determine, the effect may extend far beyond their neighborhood; possibly to the entire world. This aspect of the story builds tension and leaves the audience questioning what direction the film will go from this point.

Initially, the family treats their imprisonment like a temporary inconvenience. They count the days, waiting for whatever has trapped them to disappear. Then the days become weeks. Weeks become months. Eventually, they stop counting days altogether and begin counting years. That gradual shift in their perception of time is one of the film's most effective elements because the horror isn't just about being trapped; it's about realizing that this may be their permanent reality.

Early on, the family is primarily concerned with keeping themselves occupied. They find ways to stave off boredom, maintain routines, and preserve some sense of normalcy.

Basic necessities begin to dwindle and disappear, but because Ann, played by Greta Lee (Russian Doll), resourcefully starts an indoor garden. Her husband Jason, played by Wagner Moura (Narcos), fashions various contraptions that catch and store water so the family is able to survive, barely. Both lead performances are strong and add to the increasing tension as the story builds.

For much of the movie, the source of the mysterious phenomenon is unknown, but that mystery is eventually answered, and the explanation takes the story in a supernatural direction. That discovery changes the way the audience can look at everything that came before it. 

Noah Alexander Sosnowski, Emma Ho, Gabriel Barbosa and Riley Chung play the children of Ann and Jason Delgado at various ages as the film progresses, and ultimately become the catalysts for the family to shift their perspective as captives and attempt an escape.

The family has to make many difficult decisions along the way to prolong their survival in this sci-fi horror/thriller, which leads viewers to contemplate what they would do if faced with the same situation.
