The End of Oak Street drops second trailer
Since the early 1800s, dinosaurs have fascinated humanity, as their unearthed fossils reveal more about our Earth’s prehistoric past. This fascination can be seen in the constant adorning of children’s clothing with dino prints, or the fact that we have seven Jurassic Park movies.
And while August is jam-packed with horror releases, the film that has most captured my attention is David Robert Mitchell’s The End of Oak Street, releasing Aug. 14. The survival film from the It Follows director stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor as a suburban couple who find themselves facing off against dinosaurs when their neighborhood is mysteriously transported to the Jurassic period.
The film’s first trailer opens on interior shots of the family’s home, as a rainstorm outside is interrupted by strange flashes of light. We see Hathaway and McGregor bunkered down in their living room, as the pair’s children ask what exactly is going on, only for Anne Hathaway to reply that the family home, their neighborhood, everything has moved somewhere else. It is then made clear that this isn’t a simple fix as the family’s car comes to a sudden stop on the edge of their neighborhood, a massive cliffside separating them from the rest of the prehistoric wilderness. In the trailer’s final shot, we watch from within the home as the family is chased by a tyrannosaurus rex, promising plenty of thrills and danger as the family tries to survive and figure out exactly what is going on.
The film’s second trailer expands upon the first, as the family debates what exactly the strange flashes of light at night are over breakfast with McGregor jokingly proposing aliens. We then see the impact the disturbance has on the neighborhood as Hathaway struggles with no running water or electricity. As the family ventures out into the neighborhood, they are quickly greeted by their new reality as a velociraptor tears their curious neighbor apart before their eyes. The final moments of the trailer promise a survival film full of carnage as suburban citizens struggle to survive against the onslaught of dinosaurs with a crazed Anne Hathaway wielding a shotgun against a t-rex.
Based on these two trailers, it looks like The End of Oak Street promises to be brutal survival film stuffed into a sci-fi mystery. We see several more moments of science fiction weirdness in the second trailer as Hathaway and McGregor peer into a strange orb, seeing reflected glimpses of their neighborhood. While we will have to wait and see what exactly is going on on Oak Street, fans are already speculating that the film may be a franchise-continuation in disguise, particularly due to the fact that JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing. More particularly, fans speculate that The End of Oak Street may be another entry in the genre-spanning Cloverfield franchise, with internet truthseekers pointing out that in the franchise’s last entry The Cloverfield Paradox there is mention of city blocks mysteriously disappearing across the country. While the film’s cast and crew remain tightlipped on this possibility, audiences will have to venture to theatres for the film’s Aug. 14 release to find out what exactly is going on, and of course see Anne Hathaway shoot a T-Rex.
