Five Nights at Freddy’s anniversary includes peek into franchise’s future
Another year has come and gone, with this marking the 12th anniversary of the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise created by ScottGames on Aug. 8, 2014. Fans have come to expect a social media post or even an announcement of some sort to celebrate the occasion each year, and this time was no different.
Kicking off the day was a cryptic image of a pizza posted by ScottGames. Fans who edited the image found hidden clues, including a mall map, the words “coming soon,” and the letters “NJ” and “A.” Turns out this was a teaser for the first announcement: a permanent, real life Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza located exclusively at the American Dream mall in New Jersey. The grand opening is set for 2027.

“Developed in collaboration with ScottGames, the experience will be a functional reimagining of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, designed to immerse guests in the world of the iconic franchise,” explains American Dream. They describe how, “visitors will be able to dine at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, play arcade games, experience animatronic stage shows featuring Freddy and the Fazbear Band, visit Foxy’s Pirate Cove, and step behind the curtain for immersive multiplayer survival-horror experiences.”
Atreyu, also known as the popular Five Nights at Freddy’s cosplayer DaRegularSauce, has revealed himself to be the creative lead on the project.
“It's not that often that an IP driven project is taken 100% seriously with only the absolute most care and passion for the franchise by EVERYONE involved,” writes Atreyu. “We aren't just making a quick & cheap experience here, this is being created from a place of genuine passion for the Entire Five Nights at Freddy's franchise- we are all so grateful to have been put into the positions to make this happen with ScottGames, who have been an absolute pleasure to get to work closely with to make sure we are doing this as close to their vision as possible.”
Atreyu is no stranger to officially collaborating with the franchise. In the past, he’s worked with Steel Wool Studios on detailed replicas of props and characters from the games to be displayed at their convention booths. He’s also used his cosplays for official promotional videos and con appearances.
The next teaser was posted by Steel Wool Studios, the primary game studio responsible for the current era of Five Nights at Freddy’s games. At first, it looks like just another one of their “guess the character” videos, featuring Vanny from Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach (2021). However, a quick glitch in the video reveals what looks to be concept art for a new Vanny design. She seems to be brandishing a knife, which was a prominent detail for the character in Security Breach’s concept art before it was ultimately scrapped from the final game. Fans have speculated that the video is teasing a sequel to Security Breach, though nothing has been confirmed at this time.

The final teaser came from Mega Cat Studios in the form of the number two. The number contains art that appears to depict the Adventure Animatronics from FNaF World, a turn-based action RPG released by ScottGames in 2016. Despite its rough reception at launch, FNaF World has amassed a cult following amongst fans. Now, it looks as though their prayers for a sequel have finally been answered.

This would be Mega Cat Studios’ second Five Nights at Freddy’s game, following Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit (2024). Into the Pit is an adaptation of the story of the same name from the Fazbear Frights anthology book series. It’s a 16-bit side-scrolling horror adventure game reminiscent of Clock Tower (1995). In it, players must travel between time periods to solve puzzles, gather clues, and survive against a relentless monster.
Five Nights at Freddy’s began as a simple point-and-click indie horror game. You play as the night guard working at an animatronic pizzeria in the 1990s trying to make it to the end of the week. What should’ve been an easy gig quickly turns into the most dangerous minimum-wage paycheck you’ll ever earn when you learn that the pizzeria’s colorful animatronic characters take on a life of their own at night.
The game was developed and released by Scott Cawthon under his one-man game studio, ScottGames. It unexpectedly exploded in popularity after YouTuber Markiplier posted a video playing the demo. Since then it has spawned over a dozen sequels and spin-offs, multiple book series, graphic novelizations of those book series, film adaptations, several lines of merchandise, and more.
As the franchise grew, Cawthon would keep expanding on its lore by carefully planting hidden details for fans to find in each entry. He remains at the helm today, overseeing each new project as he continues to craft its complex narrative. However, he would entrust Steel Wool Studios to develop the series’ mainline games after he concluded its first story arc, starting with Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted in 2019.
Five Nights at Freddy’s has gradually shed its darker, moodier tone to appeal more to the younger audience it has attracted, shifting to something more sci-fi. While this has proven to be a controversial choice, the franchise is still going strong today. And as this year’s anniversary indicates, it’s showing no signs of stopping.
