[EVENT REVIEW] Batette Follies of 1939 (Unauthorized & Unofficial Dark Night parody)

Brought to you by Russall S. Beattie

*The Montalban 1615 Vine St, Hollywood, CA

My husband and I were invited to see Batette Follies of 1939 at the beautiful and historic Montalban Theater in Hollywood, CA. This was actually our first time in this theater and it was gorgeous! Built in 1926 with a capacity of 1,700 people. This theater is a venue for a variety of performances, to my surprise it was founded specifically to promote Latino stage productions. Being a Latina myself I admire businesses showing love to the community.

This showcase runs through July 14th 2024, don’t miss out the opportunity to see this for yourself. This is an 18+ show that starts at $39 Thursdays-Sundays.

The theater has its own parking for $13, the attendant stated the parking is all night which would be a great location to leave your car if you want to catch a drink somewhere close by after the show.

We had VIP tickets which gives you access to a roof top pre show event along with photo opportunities with the cast but unfortunately they had some difficulties with the rooftop and the pre-show was cancelled on the night we attended. They accommodated us by offering a free drink upstairs in their lounge/bar area.

In the lobby you have memorabilia; take some time to view everything, this was a great display. Upstairs you have a full bar with specialty themed drinks. A concession stand that has popcorn, snacks, vegan options and gluten free. Along with a lounge area to pass some time before the show. We had the Dark Night but substituted the vodka for whiskey, it was delicious.

To all my DC and villain fans this is a performance you cannot miss. Along with Batman and Robin there’s many of Gotham City’s infamous villains with a prohibition-era twist. Dressing up is welcomed but not mandatory, people dress up in DC themed costumes or prohibition-era attire.

We found our seats to watch the show; this was a 90 minute show case, each character had their own set. There was circus like performances, singing, tap dancing, dark humor, burlesque, animation projections, and cabaret with a seductive twist. The cast was incredibly talented, the costumes and props truly made the performance memorable.

Merchandise is available for purchase. After the performance check out the lobby where you can run into some of the performers and interact with them. Overall we would recommend this show, we did not know what to expect but we were both blown away.

You can buy your tickets on the Fever app, there is a box office however tickets may be sold out in order to assure your seats purchase online. Photography and videography is prohibited.
