Paranormal Activity: Threshold officially cancelled
Game development, like any art form, is a massive undertaking. It requires a certain degree of care for the work, determination to see it through, and most importantly, time and patience so that the game is as good as it can be. While it can’t be said that every delayed game ends up being worth the wait, it’s usually for the better that a developer pushes back their game’s release, lest they rush out a bad product.
That’s how Darkstone Digital’s Brian Clarke felt about the development of Paranormal Activity: Threshold. The game was announced back in October of 2025, with Clarke—who had already made a name for himself with his indie horror game The Mortuary Assistant (2022)—being attached as Threshold’s sole-developer.
The game was being published by DreadXP, and it was slated to release sometime this year. But as Clarke said in a recent X post about the game, he didn’t think that he could meet that release window.
“It became clear that the game needed more time to ensure it was the best it could possibly be,” wrote Clarke. “DreadXP stood by my need for more time and, together, we made a request to Paramount for a time extension.”
“Sadly, Paramount did not agree to extend development,” Clarke continued. “This left me with two choices: Rush through development and release a sub-par product I would not be proud of or request we go our separate ways. I chose the latter.”
With that, Paranormal Activity: Threshold has been canceled. But what does that mean for Clarke? He closed out his announcement by stating, “So this chapter ends for me but I’m not going anywhere. I may need a small vacation, but I am excited and eager to return to my corner of horror that you all have so generously allowed me to occupy.”
Although Threshold wasn’t given the chance to come to fruition, it’s comforting to know that Clarke is far from done with his work in the horror gaming scene.
Whether his next project is another licensed IP, a sequel to The Mortuary Assistant, or something else entirely, remains to be seen. But whatever it turns out to be, it’ll be in safe hands knowing that Clarke is determined to take his time and treat it with care.
