The 90’s have arrived with The Craft'd: An Unauthorized Musical Parody
In Los Angeles, there were rumblings about a coven that was hell-bent on getting revenge on the people who hurt them in High School. Nancy Downs, Bonnie, and Rochelle were sure their 4th witch was arriving to help them complete the circle to summon Manon. That’s where Sarah Bailey comes into the picture. If you’ve seen ‘The Craft’ (1996), then you know the story about these girls and how it all ends.
If you’ve seen ‘The Craft'd: An Unauthorized Musical Parody’, you were probably too busy singing along and laughing to know how it would all end. This parody musical was written and directed by Troy Heard, with music direction and arrangements by Brandon Scott Grayson.
Watching this parody musical with a live audience who sold out every seat at Three Clubs in Los Angeles on the final night, I wasn’t sure what to expect because parody musicals can be very entertaining or can hit the ground running and fall flat on its face. ‘The Craft’d’ knows its target audience and their love for 90’s music, movie references, and goth baddies, so naturally it was going to be a successful night of witchcraft, teenage angst, and demon summoning rituals.
It was no surprise that nostalgia plays a big factor in these Theater productions, and after two showings in LA, we want to join this coven! The cast was phenomenal, from blocking to costuming to basically portraying the actors from the film itself; the immersion was real. The interactive portion of the show was new and inviting. Typically, during a performance, you sit quietly in your seat and let the actors run through their lines, dance numbers, and enjoy the show.
With Majestic Repertory Theatre shows, you’re part of it! You might even get pulled in for a dance number or asked how the show is going in the middle of it with Jerry Springer? Yes, Jerry makes an appearance during the show to ask Sarah how she survived a run-in with a group of witches ready to take down their high school bullies.
This parody musical was only available in Las Vegas, Nevada, during its inception, and the idea came after the popularity of ‘Scream’d: An Unauthorized Musical Parody’ that took the internet by storm. It was no surprise that another stage show would come shortly after that success, and what better film to parody than ‘The Craft’? The show has concluded its run in Los Angeles, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be more shows coming up soon…
It was just announced that ‘Scream’d’ is coming back this Fall to Majestic Repertory Theatre. Stay tuned for more info!
