[MOVIE REVIEW: 'The Monkey'] This dark comedy has plenty of blood and gore but lacks in scares

Osgood Perkins has been on everyone’s radar since ‘Long Legs’ took over the Box Office last year and now he’s back with a Stephen King adaptation of ‘The Monkey’

“When twin brothers Bill and Hal find their father's old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths start. The siblings decide to throw the toy away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years.”

Over the years we’ve seen several Stephen King adaptations that have been done incredibly well and several that just missed the mark. It’s safe to say that ‘The Monkey’ is a fantastic film. It does market itself as a horror but it felt more like a dark comedy with some horror aspects to it.

The story was simple but unique, Stephen King is very good at making stories batshit crazy and this is very much the route it goes. We have bloody explosions and guts flying everywhere, and Theo Thomas, who plays the twin brothers, along with Christian Convery, who is the younger twins, both do a phenomenal job playing double duty and showing their acting chops.

Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends) makes a return to the genre in a very funny bit role and he chews up the scenery. My one gripe is the wig. It’s giving Wish Eddie Munson, but that’s just being nitpicky.

If you’re looking to laugh a lot, see some blood and guts, and be mildly scared, check out ‘The Monkey’ with some friends and have a fun night off. Also, check out more of Osgood films. My recommendations are: ‘I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House’ and ‘Gretel And Hansel’ Deserve some more love.

‘The Monkey’ is in theaters February 21st
